On the concept phase our manufacturing engineers support the product development by: Preliminary analysis of deep-drawn and assembly feasibility for the BIW panels and subassemblies, Definition of matching solutions and assembly sequence, Joining solutions for sheet metals components and subassemblies.

On the product development phase, we can integrate the service with the OEM's manufacturing departments supplying: Definition of deep-drawing method, Deep-drawing numerical simulation of sheet metal panels, Definition of assembly sequence, reference points and fixtures location, Control plans execution and management for supplier definition and final tooling kick off.


Decades of design and engineering work to find the right solutions for our customer's engineering problems, allowed Italdesign-Giugiaro to innovate the automotive world: the most significant results of our research and development work are internationally patented.

 




Body Engineering
The body in white is the largest vehicle system, and it's the interface to all relevant engineering areas. Four decades of body shell developments have made the Body in white development one of Italdesign-Giugiaro core competence.

The recent years have seen a major market attention to road users' safety, fuel consumption and vehicle performances. These requirements, together with the need of attractive shapes and new functionalities, are pushing up the level of expectations on body shell development and construction.

More than two-hundred engineers and technicians work to achieve the various products demands, such as lightweight design, crashworthiness, quality and costs and to match the process requirements for sheet metal forming, assembly and painting. The experience on body in white development covers all the range of vehicles, taking into consideration the individual characteristics of each one. To speed up the development process, starting from the earliest phases, a wide number of digital tools is used in order to support the work of our engineers and technicians. This is These tools include digital mock-up (DMU), CAE simulations and CAD.



Chassis and Powertrain
Chassis
Huge progress has been achieved in the field of vehicles safety, both passive and active. Chassis systems are the way to achieve the correct level of active safety.
Even if the application of electronic systems as ABS, ESP, TC, etc. enables to reduce the risks a good performance of the chassis platform is mandatory as index of the quality of the car and as characteristic of the driving dynamics.
Partnership and collaboration with many OEM's and consolidated experience enables us to develop and integrate the following systems:
- Vehicle suspension
- Steering system
- Brake system
- Fuel system
- Engine suspension
- Pedals

Powertrain
Being responsible for the development of complete vehicles, Italdesign Giugiaro is in charge to perform the functional and geometrical integration of powertrain systems.
Nowadays, the big challenge to reduce CO2 emissions, directly correlated to fuel consumption, involves all the systems and, in particular, an accurate investigation on air intake and exhaust systems fluid dynamics and fine tuning of thermal management, including engine cooling and air conditioning, is definitely mandatory to fulfil the targets. As application of drivetrain systems our company is responsible for the development of transmission lines, from simple driveshafts to complex all wheel drive systems, covering all the aspects, from durability to vibration and acoustics effects on complete vehicle.

Powertrain engineers perform functional and geometrical integration of the following systems: - Air intake
- Exhaust system
- Cooling system
- Air conditioning
- Driveline
- Gear mechanism





E/E Systems and Components
Around 90% of innovation in new cars are electronic based. Communications, Information, Vehicle Dynamic control, Occupant safety, Body and Convenience functionalities all are dependent on electronic systems and are crucial to the identity of one's brand.
Meeting that need, Italdesign-Giugiaro can bridge the gap between single subsystem/component know-how and complete vehicle competence, helping the OEM's on:
- Adopting/Developing the most suitable E/E Architecture in the areas of: Power and Signal distribution, Networks, Diagnosis
- Managing the development, in partnership with Codesign Suppliers, of E/E Subsystems and Components especially in the domain of Infotainment and Communication and Body Electrics and Electronics
- Integrating, Functionally and Geometrically, all E/E Subsystem and Components into the vehicle
- Integrating all E/E Subsystem and Components, typically developed and produced by different suppliers, from the point of view of Communication on the various Networks.

This last activity, often called Electronic System Integration, has become of extreme importance in recent years and is essential to guarantee the right level of performances and reliability that modern vehicles require.



Trim Engineering
Exterior Trim
A vehicle's exterior appeal deeply depends on the aesthetic and functional characteristics of the exterior trim elements.
Italdesign Giugiaro engineering team design all this components and since the very early concept phase, helps the customer to set-up performance and cost target and  insures their achievability through preliminary analysis of gaps and flushes, aerodynamic, thermal and safety performance. In the development phase, our engineers monitor the supplier development activities and guarantee the full vehicle integration up to the start of production.

Interior Trim
The vehicle interior trims play a major role in the man-machine interface. Basically all senses are involved in how the consumer feels his vehicle. Italdesign Giugiaro, recognizing the importance of good design and engineering robustness, supports the vehicle manufacturers by providing advice in the form of "interior design feasibility", which help them to build vehicles that meet consumer tastes and needs. A proper engineering design adds value to the product, integrating the ever-growing demands for safety performances on instrument panels, seats, restraint systems, door panels with customer requirements in terms of quality and cost, always guaranteeing an on-board life experience that meets the current and future needs of the vehicles end users.
