State-of-the-art technology and hand-crafting are the two contrasting yet integrated spirits behind our modelling department. CAD and numerically-controlled 3D milling coexist with model-makers and upholsterers to breathe life into exterior and interior models.
Exterior models
Once a stylistic solution has been identified from among the many alternatives suggested by the style centre, the data originally used for the production of the 3-D renderings are sent to the modelling department where 16 numerically-controlled milling machines produce the models using CAM applications. The milling machines are able to produce models on any scale, in a range of materials (polystyrene, plaster and special resins) according to requirements, for both exterior lines and interiors.
The trimming and modifying process is, however, left to the manual skill of the modellers, who combine technology with craftsmanship, enabling them to attend to every last detail.
The exterior models are produced on a 1:1 scale to allow the best design solutions to be developed.
Interior models
If interior models are required, the external structure is roughly sketched out, whilst dummies are constructed from polystyrene or Plasticine to assess the quality of the interior passenger space and comfort. The minimal changes to the model are in 3D relief, to guarantee that they match up with the virtual model. The team shapes its ideas by working with 3D renderings and CAD functions to build models and show cars.
